2012: Brianna Coykendall – Twins I Never Met

High School Poetry Winner from the 2012 Issue
Twins I Never Met
Brianna Coykendall

While the teabags soak
and the sunlight holds dust in its grasp;

While the fridge hums
and the tuxedo cat pads down the stairs;

While the man on the TV takes a deep breath
and lifts the paper with shaking hands;

While the woman’s palm covers her mouth
and the glass bounces off the floor;

While the crossing guard is yelling
and there are too many legs to find my father;

While the two towers bow down
and we plead for strength;

I ask why
and no one answers.
